Ruth Elizabeth Jones

Ruth fell in love with ceramics and the feeling of working with her hands at a very young age. She first studied 3D design, and then went on to study Ceramics. She now works from her studio in rural Dumfriesshire.

The vessels she builds seem to recall the female form. They are rounded and graceful. Ruth employs hand building techniques that were used by neolithic potters from prehistoric matriarchal cultures. She then uses sustainably sourced shavings of soft and hardwoods to smoke-fire the work. The state of meditative focus with which she works is clearly understood when looking at her work.

The soft mark-making across the surface is very intentional. In this way she creates movement and texture. These uniquely textured surfaces are highly responsive to changes in light, where each facet reveals a new mood or atmosphere. Thinking simultaneously about inner volume, and outer form, Ruth creates vessels that evoke the stillness of a quiet holding or containing space.
