Katie Spragg British, b. 1987
4 3/8 x 3 1/2 x 4 in
Over the course of 2023, Katie Spragg engaged in a multi-site residency, traveling from Braemar, Scotland to Hauser & Wirth Menorca and concluding at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Though exploring these landscapes and meeting local people through clay workshops and walks the artist had many insightful conversations. These interactions with herbalists, florists, landscapers, local families, school children and carers, combined with their own exploration of plants, have layered upon existing knowledge. The plants encountered are woven into the sculptures made, layering new stories, names and uses.
This piece was made in response to finding Devil’s-bit scabious buds emerging from ‘beusty’ (an old Scots word meaning last year’s grasses that are somewhat withered) grasses in a field in Scotland.
