Tinct is an exhibition exploring colour, form, and textures intertwined in complex dialogues by artists Tilde Grynnerup, Maria Wojdat, Lucy Newman, Olivia Rees and Ying Zheng. The collection of works, from both established and emerging artists with a unique perspective on the use of colour in their creations. From bold, vibrant hues to subtle, muted tones, the exhibition showcases a variety of mediums, including wood sculpture, ceramics, and embroidery.
Exploring diverse disciplines, Tilde Grynnerup artistic pursuits span across a multitude of fields, ranging from painting and sculpture to embroidery, photography, and conceptual art. Her creations reflect a combination of inspiration and technical skills, which she has gained from the diverse experiences of her upbringing. Tilde's work is influenced by her background working in the fashion industry, as well as her father's carpentry practice, which she inherited while growing up in his workshop. These art forms have merged to create her current practice, which showcases both wood carvings and textile-based pieces.
Maria Wojdat is an artist with a background in graphic design. She transitioned to ceramics to explore her interest in hands-on work. Mid-century art and design inspire her work, which features minimal aesthetics and bold colour combinations. Her pieces inquire into the themes of connection, relationships, boundaries, and division through pared-down forms that serve as canvases for perfect lines in 3D. Her matte ceramic surfaces are inspired by paper, and her creative process examines the relationship between the geometric and the organic, as well as the connections between two and three dimensions.
Exploring the relationships between material beings Olivia Rees utilises ceramics as a medium to investigate the connections between all forms of matter. Her Hylomorph series delves into the relationship between nature, matter, and material culture by featuring typically static materials in a state of growth. The sculptures convey a natural tendency of dynamism and agency through their intricate textures and structural complexity, further accentuated using colour. To display each sculpture's form, textures, and surface without obstruction, they are fired only once and left unglazed.
Blurring the line between technology and tradition, Lucy Newman artistic process involves a harmonious interplay between the immediacy of technology and the slow thoughtfulness of tradition. Beginning in the digital realm, she manipulates imagery in unique ways. These digitally distorted images then take on a new life in the physical world through the art of hand embroidery. Newman's embroidered ‘paintings’ are an intricate balance between the imagined and the real, often delving into themes of nature and futurism. Her artistic compositions are a stunning display of colour, form, and negative space, where the digital realm seems to have infiltrated and corrupted nature itself.
Ying Zheng's Purity of True Feelings delves into the purity of human emotions and relationships. In her latest works, Ying uses ceramics to investigate the interplay between stability and fluidity, delving into the core of projection, superego, and conflict in romantic relationships. The abstract form of her creations, characterized by a porous structure, symbolizes the intangible yet palpable changes in our emotional states. The outward flow of liquid also conveys the intensity of our feelings.
