Ruup & Form is proud to present Faces of Flame, an extraordinary installation by emerging ceramic artist Ekta Bagri. This thought-provoking exhibit masterfully blends sustainable wood-firing techniques with innovative ceramic artistry, creating a powerful dialogue between fire, material, and environmental consciousness.

Bagri’s work reflects her dedication to sustainability and the integration of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary methods. Her process involves using waste materials such as pallet wood and agricultural by-products to reduce environmental impact. The installation is a result of an intense 72-hour wood-firing process, where flames interact with clay to produce intricate textures and ash-based glazes, turning waste into art.
Influenced by her experiences working with traditional potters across the globe—from Bengal to South Korea—Bagri’s ceramics are a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and sustainable practices. Through Faces of Flame, she challenges conventional perceptions of value and production, elevating discarded materials into striking works of art.
“Faces of Flame is more than a series of ceramic pieces; it’s a reflection of my journey as an artist and researcher,” says Bagri. “This work embodies my commitment to sustainability, respect for traditional craftsmanship, and passion for innovative ceramic techniques. I hope it inspires viewers to appreciate the intricate beauty and transformative power of wood-fired ceramics.”
Each face in the installation tells its own story. The varying degrees of heat and the direction of the flames create distinct patterns and textures on the surface of the clay. Some pieces bear the marks of intense heat and rapid cooling, resulting in crackled glazes and rugged textures, while others display smoother, more uniform surfaces where the flames have gently caressed the clay. These variations capture the essence of the firing process, where control and unpredictability coexist, producing works that are both spontaneous and deliberate.
The inspiration for this series also draws from the artists experiences working with traditional potters around the world. In Bengal's Kumartuli Potters Colony, Bagri learned the art of idol-making from China Pal, one of the few female artists in a predominantly male community. This experience taught her the value of preserving traditional techniques while infusing them with contemporary relevance, while her residency with Oongi Master Hyangjong Oh in South Korea enriched her understanding of wood-firing and its cultural significance.
About Ekta Bagri
Ekta Bagri, born in India (1999), is an innovative ceramic artist and researcher currently based in Oxford. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and History of Art from Goldsmiths, University of London, followed by a Master’s in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art, London. She is presently pursuing an MSc in Archaeology of Asian Ceramics at Oxford University.
Bagri’s work is deeply rooted in sustainability and traditional ceramic practices. Her global projects include collaborations with the Oxford University Kilns Project, Kumartuli Potters Colony in Bengal, the Oongi Residency in South Korea, and Takatori Pottery in Japan and Vietnam. By transforming waste materials into art, Bagri continues to push the boundaries of contemporary ceramics while preserving and reimagining historical techniques.
