British Art Fair, SOLO COTEMPORARY, Stand 8
Saatchi Gallery
Ruup & Form is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kay Le Seelleur Ara at the British Art Fair, SOLO CONTEMPORARY, following her recent participation in the group show Vice and Virtue at the gallery. Kay previously exhibited in Jersey in 2023 with her solo show Mrs Magnitudes Emporium and is currently showing her work in Curiosity Didn’t Kill the Cat at CCA Galleries International.
Kay Le Seelleur Ara was born in St Albans, Hertfordshire in 1941. She is a prolific painter whose provocative and visionary painting, sharp humour, incisive explorations of gender politics and autobiographical imagery draw upon wide range of experiences.
Her mastery of line is evident in her drawings and paintings. Colour, shape and text create figurative dramas, unexpected events and lots of naked bodies play acting. Anarchic, humorous, and sometimes shocking stories unfold within an assortment of recycled frames.
Each piece is complemented by a witty and considered title, offering another glimpse into Kay’s inventive mind.
Kay studied at the renowned Corsham, Bath Academy of Art from 1958 to 1962 where she was taught by working artists - influential British modernists including Howard Hodgkin, Adrian Heath and Henry Cliffe. After art school, she taught in London and subsequently raised a family in Jersey and only painted sporadically.
In 2017 an accident left her dependant on walking sticks. Kay reacted to this adversity by starting to draw and paint again working every day of the year. The result has been an extraordinary outpouring of exciting, mature and original work.
Her art reflects life as it unfolds around her, both in real life and on social media, distilled into complex images peppered with her biting wit and gentle humour. Kay’s vision is entirely her own, transcending artworld trends to create a body of work that is uniquely compelling.
She currently lives and works in Jersey, Channel Islands
