Ruup & Form presents Reclaim at Material Matters, September 2022

Ruup & Form is delighted to announce its collaboration with Material Matters, in their debut year during London Design Festival, from 22-25 September 2022.

For the exhibition opening in Bargehouse, Ruup & Form has conceptualised a site-specific installation titled ‘Reclaim’. The installation is a collective of hanging textile panels taking its inspiration from the layers of history, in dialogue with the decay and the beauty of the historic building, celebrating it using materials and techniques.

This will be the inauguration of our first Artist- in-Residence program awarded to Beatrice Mayfield, a contemporary textile and embroidery artist. Working towards creating an immersive install, Beatrice will be running workshops and working alongside other artists to create the install in the lead up to the exhibition.

Beatrice Mayfield will be using Jogakbo, a traditional textile patchwork technique using scraps of left-over fabric to create these dimensions of long panels. This technique allows for the hanging panels to have no right side, with the colour palette responding to the decay and beauty of the historic Bargehouse. Embellishing the panels further by Beatrice’s signature embroidery using beading and heavy textures on surface.

The installation will be including works of other multidisciplinary artists to the panels. The invited collaborating artists have been chosen for their use of unique material, with sustainability being a connecting theme.

We will be announcing all the names of artists collaborating with Ruup & Form for Reclaim.

About Beatrice Mayfield

1967, UK

Born in Exeter , Beatrice lives and works in London. Beatrice uses textile, embroidery techniques and process combined with handprint to create three dimensional wearable sculptures and commissioned works.

Hand embroidery techniques are always at the centre of these designs, creating the texture & colour, normally provided by precious metals and gems. She explores the use of non-precious & unconventional materials to create heirlooms of the future. All inspiration comes from the landscape, normally that of London where she is based.

Beatrice is also one third of LOT, a collaborative project with jewellers, Sarah Pulvertaft & Jed Green. They started working together in 2017 & have shown at London Craft Week in 2018 and 2021, Collect Open in 2019 & recently presented a new piece for Crafts Alive at Rodmarton Manor commissioned by Gloucestershire Guild.

About Material Matters, 2022

Material Matters 2022 is a new fixture on the London design calendar. Based on the critically acclaimed podcast of the same name, the event will see its inaugural edition take place during this year’s London Design Festival, from 22-25 September on London’s Southbank. The event promises to bring together over 40 world-leading brands, designers, makers and organisations to celebrate the importance of materials and their ability to shape our lives. It will provide a platform for inspiration for architects, designers, interior design professionals and design-savvy members of the public.

Material Matters 2022 will take place across five floors of the iconic Bargehouse at Oxo Tower Wharf, an unadorned but magnificent former factory setting, and feature a wide range of exhibits across the floors. The top floor, a stupendous 50-metre long loft will host the fair’s talk space, with a programme curated by Grant Gibson, and cafe, as well as designers and makers working in a range of materials, from the innovative to the more traditional.
