COMMUNION: An Exclusive Live Art Performance by Kerry Lemon as MRS ROE
07.09.24
Ruup & Form welcomes back renowned artist Kerry Lemon for her second performance at the gallery. COMMUNION is a ground-breaking live art performance under her evocative alter-ego, MRS ROE. This unique event offers a transformative experience that merges art, botany, and the exploration of female identity and reproductive rights.
COMMUNION will feature MRS ROE as she conducts a live copper plating of cuttings from the abortifacient tansy plant, a botanical symbol with deep historical ties to female autonomy. This performance, conceived during a Spring 2024 residency at Xenia Creative Retreat, reflects MRS ROE's ongoing exploration of the intersections between woman's ancient knowledge, western medicine, and contemporary global reproductive justice.
MRS ROE’s work delves into the dislocation from the land and the pervasive influence of global and local power structures on female sexuality and reproduction. By illuminating the often-forgotten indigenous medicinal plant heritage, once safeguarded by woman, MRS ROE invites a re-examination of these ancient systems of knowledge. Her art imagines a future where non-hierarchical relationships with our planet—across bacterial, animal, geological, and botanical dimensions—are possible.
