The Dragon’s Tale was created as part of a nine-part sonic–visual collaboration with the Will Barnes Quartet, who invited Hughe's to make an artwork responding to each track on their acclaimed album Source of the Seven. This work corresponds to Track Three of the album.

Distinct from the surrounding compositions, The Dragon’s Tale carries a warmth and subtle Eastern inflection within its musical structure, setting it apart in tone and atmosphere. The piece was inspired by the landscape surrounding Clywedog Reservoir, where a small island at its centre forms a shape reminiscent of a dragon’s tail rising from the water.

In response, Hughe's travelled to the site and photographed the landscape during a particularly fiery sunset, when the sky and water seemed to echo the music’s glowing, lyrical quality. Using hand-marbled papers cut and assembled in the manner of pietra dura, she translated this moment into a layered, stone-like composition. The work depicts a specific Welsh landscape while also embracing a sense of myth and storytelling, allowing the land, the music, and the imagined presence of the dragon to merge into a single visual response to the track.
