Katherine’s Base corresponds to Track Six from Source of the Seven, the acclaimed album by the Will Barnes Quartet, and was created as part of a nine-part sonic–visual collaboration in which Hughe's was invited to respond visually to each track.
The composition is rooted in the instrument itself: the double bass played by Clovis Phillips, which once belonged to his grandmother. She was a cellist, and later in life became profoundly deaf. Despite this, she attended the very first Will Barnes Quartet performance, placing her hands on the double bass so she could feel the vibrations of the music as it was being played. The track was created as a tribute to her presence, memory, and embodied way of experiencing sound, forming an important part of the band’s emotional and musical landscape.
In response, Hughe's chose to depict a familiar road leading towards an area of outstanding natural beauty near Dylife, a route known for its quiet expansiveness and sense of gradual unfolding. When Hughe's encountered the scene, a small group of sheep stood in the road beneath a calm, glowing sunset, creating a moment of stillness and gentle rhythm that felt deeply attuned to the music.
Using hand-marbled papers cut and collaged in the manner of pietra dura, Hughe's incorporated a range of marbled inflections and tonal shifts that echo the layered warmth of the composition. The resulting work aims to convey a sense of resonance, continuity, and touch — reflecting not just the sound of the bass, but the way the music is felt, held, and passed through generations.
