Passing Time was created in response to Track Eight from the Will Barnes Quartet’s album Source of the Seven, sharing the same title. The work forms part of a nine-part sonic–visual collaboration in which Hughe's was invited to make an artwork responding to each track on the album.
The piece depicts the hilltop ridgeway that lies between Erin's home and Will Barnes’ house. Although they live around two miles apart, the sparsely populated landscape and open terrain create a shared horizon, one defined more by time, weather, and movement than by human presence. This elevated ridge offers wide views across the valley, where shifting light and passing clouds become a quiet measure of duration.
Using hand-marbled papers cut and assembled in the manner of pietra dura, Hughe's incorporated cloud-like marbling that drifts across the composition, echoing the sensation of clouds moving over the hills as seen from the ridgeway. Busier, more animated marbling along the edges suggests the changing blue of the sky, introducing a cooling tonal contrast that reflects the musical structure of the track. The work aims to capture a sense of gradual motion and suspended time — a visual counterpart to the composition’s calm, reflective, pacing.
