Interwoven: Neurodiversity and the Creative Mind launched in 2020, exploring the intersection
of my ADHD and creative expression through a series of compulsively crocheted
hanging forms. Driven by a hyperactive need to use my hands, the work channels the
physical urgency of making. I was drawn to jute twine for its accessibility, but also for its
coarse texture and structural solidity, which mirrored the harshness and weight of the
masks I’ve worn. The first chapter, Masking, visualises the shifting, adaptive forms of the
neurodivergent masks I wear to navigate a neurotypical world.
Each stage of Interwoven includes 2D visualisations created through intuitive,
singular mark-making that is embedded in the instinctive 3D-making
process. These marks act as a form of reflection and final response, capturing
the energy and emotional residue of the crocheted forms.
