Gerald Mak
Gerald Mak, an artist from Hong Kong and now based in London, uses clay to express his changing life experiences and relationships. Mak creates vessels, sculptures, and wall panels, often decorated with carved designs of hands and gestures. The repetitive act of carving clay provides Mak with a tangible way to reflect on his evolving experiences and to process different moments in his life.
Mak's work is influenced by the cultures he grew up with, including traditional Chinese scholar items. His "After Kwunyum Vases" are based on the vase carried by Kwunyum, a Buddhist figure of compassion and mercy.
Mak’s sculptures honours traditional techniques but also reflects his personal journey exploring the connection between culture and the human experience.
Gerald Mak, born in 1991 in Hong Kong, is currently based in London, UK for living and works between London, Hong Kong and Jingdezhen.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2013, followed by a Master’s in Ceramics and Glass from Royal College of Art in 2020.
