Tilde Grynnerup Danish, b. 1973
Tilde graduated from UCC in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a degree in Textile Design, specialising in Embroidery, Her work traverses many different disciplines, from painting and sculpture, and embroidery to photography and conceptual work.
Her work draws inspiration and technical expertise from influences as varied as her background working in the fashion industry, to her father’s carpentry practice, a skillset which she inherited growing up in his workshop. The influence of these disciplines can be seen in her current practice which presents both wood carvings and textile-based pieces. Tilde continues to engage with all these disciplines because she declines that her practice be limited or dictated by the media she uses.
Although predominantly working from her studio in Copenhagen, her wood carvings necessitate she moves between her city studio and her workshop in the countryside. The interplay between the natural world she encounters in the countryside, and the metropolis of the city, is an essential dialogue within her work. She sees this contrast as analogous to the way that she works with both soft materials like textiles, and hard materials like wood and brass. Tilde finds a sense of balance and freedom in the contradictory nature of materials.
