Sam Ayre is a visual artist based in rural East Sussex whose practice explores the relationships between people, place, and the natural world. Unfolding across painting, drawing, wood-based sculpture and collaborative projects, Ayre’s work draws on the research of philosophy and shifting societal norms and histories of landscape.
Visible process and material honesty are central to Ayre’s artistic approach, with the act of making being positioned as both a social act and aesthetic. Their work invites reflection on personal values, emotions and collective responsibility to encourage imagination, openness to the unknown and embracing mistake-making.
Sam co-runs Do Your Ideas, a community carpentry and DIY workshop based in Bexhill on Sea, on the south coast of England, and is a member of Artist Union England. Ayre holds a BA in Fine Art from Byam Shaw College of Art.
